HEMIC
Hawaii Employers Mutual Insurance Company

“We aspire to be a model provider of workers’ compensation insurance.”

Created as a kama‘aina company in 1996, HEMIC was created to solve serious challenges facing Hawai`i’s workers compensation system — to stabilize the market and to ensure that all Hawai`i businesses could secure coverage.

Today, HEMIC has grown into Hawai`i’s largest provider of workers compensation insurance, a carrier of choice serving 6,700 businesses, 75,000 workers, and over 25% of the Hawai`i market.

The Approach

Osaki Creative first analyzed and researched HEMIC’s current brand to gain an understanding of its existing brand. Through the team’s study of Native Hawaiian culture, Osaki Creative developed the theme of Ahupua’a. In Hawaiian culture, an ahupua’a is the division of land dictated by the flow of water, and from this Osaki Creative learned how each section within an ahupua’a contributed to building a community.

The Challenge

In early 2020, The Hawaii Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company (HEMIC) was preparing to move into a new building in Fort Street Mall. HEMIC wanted to create a more collaborative environment in their new building and needed spaces that encouraged cross-divisional participation. HEMIC requested for OCG to create a brand story of the new building that would communicate this theme of collaboration throughout the building.

The Results

Osaki Creative Group developed 4 patterns that represented each part of an ahupua’a. Each pattern also symbolized the core values of HEMIC being “Belief”, “Excellence”, “Integrity”, and “Connection”. The theme of an ahupua’a came from the importance of collaboration from each division, as well as how each department is connected through their common goals and mission as a company. OCG oversaw the design, fabrication, and installation of the building’s interior signage to ensure the brand message’s communication.
