Rice Street Kaua‘i

We focused on keeping it simple and pure.

The Kaua‘i County came with the project to redevelop Rice Street in Lihue. The project plan included a new logo and identity for Rice Street that would be implemented on marketing materials, wayfinding signage, and promotional materials. The design needed to showcase the rich history of the area and be an identity for past, present, and future residents.

The Approach

Kaua‘i is known as the “Garden Isle,” because it is draped in lush emerald valleys, tropical rainforests, and beautiful waterfalls that connect to never ending beaches. It is also known for its sugar cane plantations and the diversity of cultures that came because of these plantations. The logo of the intertwined sugar cane reflects the community, culture and history of Lihue and Rice Street.

The Challenge

Osaki Creative needed to create a logo and brand that not only represents the past but the logo also needed to reflect the community. We needed to create a logo that is distinct and would be incorporated in the wayfinding signs along Rice Street in Lihue. We conducted a community survey, which brought up two key goals for our logo: 1) Create a reason for people to come and 2) Never forget the community’s past.

The Results

The logo created pulls from the goals mentioned. We focused on keeping it simple and pure. The design comes from interlaced sugar cane stocks that represent the plantation history of the community and the interlaced structure represents a community working together to create a better future. The colors chosen represent the island of Kaua‘i; green draws from Kaua‘i being known as the “Garden Isle“, and purple is the official color of Kaua‘i.
